Former Arsenal and France legend Robert Pires believes that his former club have let Monaco winger Thomas Lemar slip through their fingers and missed their only chance to acquire his signature, according to Bwin.
Pires told the French website, “Arsene tried to buy Lemar, and tried very hard, but I don’t think the move will happen now,” while also questioning whether the winger was really worth the £90m valuation that Monaco had placed on him.
Arsenal missed out on acquiring the French international on deadline day, despite their monster bid, and with Alexis Sanchez destined to leave the club some time this season the failure to finalise the Lemar deal could well come back to haunt Arsene Wenger.
Lemar played an influential role for Monaco last season, scoring nine times and adding a further 10 assists as the French club breezed to the Ligue 1 title. The winger also proved his worth on the European stage and bagged two goals and four assists in Monaco’s Champions League campaign, while ultimately ended in a semi-final exit at the hands of Juventus.
From their showing so far this season it seems the Gunners really could have done with a player of Lemar’s calibre. Arsenal find themselves in fifth spot in the Premier League table, nine points off leaders Manchester City after nine games.
