Emery signed Banega in 2014 when he was the head coach at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. The Spaniard previously coached the 29-year-old Argentina international at Valencia. Banega was first linked with the Gunners back in the summer when the former Paris St-Germain coach took over at the Emirates.
However, the only signings made by Arsenal for that role were Lucas Torreira, 24, and Mateo Guendouzi, 19. Banega is once again being eyed by the north London club as they chase a top-four Premier League finish and Europa League glory.
With a €20m release clause, Banega suits Arsenal’s budget which is severely restricted due to their self-financing business model. Emery believes the player rated among the most consistent in La Liga during his time there, is worth the money. It’s a player he knows and trusts; a player who knows his methods as well.
With 65 international caps to his name, Banega possesses the experience Emery craves for his midfield trio and having won the Europa League in consecutive seasons, the knowledge of how to deliver the silverware Arsenal fans crave.
