There is little doubt remaining in the footballing world that talented midfielder Mesut Ozil will still be an Arsenal player by the end of next summer, but the Germany international may not be making the expected move to the Gunners’ Premier League rivals Manchester United after all.

According to the Guardian the playmaker is being eyed up by his former club Schalke, who are looking to pull off a stunning coup and bring Ozil back into his boyhood team. Whether or not the German side will be able to compete with the financial firepower of United remains to be seen, but the romantic aspect could well be a draw for the player.

Schalke have climbed to second place in the Bundesliga after 12 games, sitting six points behind league leaders Bayern Munich. Their ascent has been in part thanks to their stingy defence, but they are also the lowest scoring team inside the top six.

The addition of Ozil therefore would certainly make them more of a threat going forwards, and if the club can keep hold of the highly rated Leon Goretzka then they would become quite the force to be reckoned with. There is little noise from Ozil’s representatives regarding the move, but stranger things have happened.
